If you're one who is a member of the outdoor meetup then this will be familiar. On Yahoo, we received the most votes on outdoor activities such as this one. We'll go out in the evening to catch the sunset and lit the flames when they should be at their brilliant and colorful. For those of you missing the outdoor meetup event, this is a good make up.
We will hike the short hike at the Eternal Flame Falls area. The hike is fairly easy, there is a big hill to climb back up on the way out, but nothing to crazy. Some creek walking is necessary so you might get your feet wet.
For those of you who don't know in the water fall at this location there is a few tiny cracks in the rocks which leak out natural gas. Sometimes the flame goes out but it's easily lit with a lighter. Overall the hike is very short.
I'll try and put the location on a map but...
1. Head south on I-90 W/New York State Thruway W
2. Take exit 55 for US-219 toward Orchard Park/Springville 1.4 mi
3. Slight right at US-219 S (signs for Orchard Park/Springville/US-219) 5.3 mi
4. Take the Armor Duells Rd exit toward Chestnut Ridge Park/RT-240/RT-277 0.4 mi
5. Turn right at New Armor Duells Rd 0.7 mi
6. Turn right at Chestnut Ridge Rd/RT-277
Continue to follow RT-277 3.6 mi
7. Turn right at Seufert Rd
There is a gate with a path, and a small gravel area to pull off the road a little to park, you are basically parking on the road
-----------
Eternal Flame Falls cuts deep into a gorge through a layer of Hanover Shale of the Late Devonian Epoch that is 85 to 95-feet thick. This shale is greenish-gray to gray colored with some black bands. The water of Shale Creek slides over the rough shale in two distinct stages to form the waterfall. The walk to this waterfall begins through a pleasant forest of pine, maple and hemlock trees, then heads steeply into the gorge on a well-trodden dirt trail. The final 0.2 mile requires a walk in the creekbed. Upon entering the gorge at the base of Eternal Flame Falls you?ll notice a change in the ambient aroma. What you smell is the natural gas that leaks from between the shale layers. When we visited in late August, two flames were burning at eye level to the right of the waterfall, each in its own little indented area in the shale. We?ve heard there can be 3 flames visible, sometimes even behind a wall of water.
